The candidate usually meets a recruiter for the first time when he goes to a military recruitment center for information. The candidate is usually assigned a suitable recruiter for his needs. The recruiter then gives the candidate all the information he needs to make a decision, including the possible career paths, opportunities, and requirements to enlist in the Marines.

When the candidate makes the decision to join, the recruiter then helps the candidate make an outline plan to reach his goals, usually based on his interests and experiences. The also can't promise to station the candidates aboard a particular ship or base, although they can try. Most of all, they can't give the candidates short cuts in application.
